The curtain goes up on a new show by Leighton Masqueraders that marks 30 years of success in the town.
Celebration, at the Raven Theatre, Cedars Upper School, on June 7/8, features highlights from all the musicals they have produced over the years. The cabaret-style of the production will see audience members seated at tables of up to seven people and there will be a cash bar open before the performance and at the interval.
The Masqueraders were formed as a breakaway musical company from the Leighton Buzzard Drama Group in 1982. Its first production was a revue called Everything Goes and was performed in Brooklands School hall. The company moved to Leighton Theatre four years later.
Since then the group have performed in musicals ranging from Oklahoma and South Pacific to The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas and Little Shop of Horrors.
In 2010 the company became the first amateur society to perform Acorn Antiques – The Musical written by Victoria Wood, who attended one of the performances.
Over the years the company have worked hard to attract a wide range of audiences, encourage long-term membership as well as welcoming up and coming young talent.
One of the performers in Celebration is a founder member, others have been involved with the group for over 25 years and some not even born when the first show was premiered. The ethos of the group has always been to nurture talent, create a love of musical theatre and have fun with like-minded people.
