An eight-year-old boy who broke his leg at school yesterday was forced to wait 48 minutes for an ambulance.
It is understood that the pupil at Leedon Lower School suffered the injury while playing football on the penultimate day of term.
A spokesman for East of England Ambulance Service confirmed that three calls were made by the school to check on the status of the ambulance before it arrived at 1.36pm.
The target response time for the emergency service to reach the location is under 30 minutes.
The EEAST spokesman said: “EEAST were called at 12.47pm to an eight-year-old boy with a suspected leg fracture.
“Crews stabilised and treated the casualty at the scene and he was transported to Luton and Dunstable Hospital for further treatment.”
Mrs Godfrey, headteacher of the Highfield Road school, said: “We were extremely impressed by the care and dedication of the ambulance staff who treated our injured pupil.
“On an extremely hot and humid day, they took time to ensure that he was made as calm and comfortable as possible throughout his treatment.”
