Road users will be incovenienced while incident detection loops are replaced on the A5 at Hockliffe.
The loops monitor traffic flow and manage speed limit enforcement and lane closures.
Works are expected to last just a day, and could take place any time in the 19 months, which is the length of the traffic order granted to the Highways Agency.
The works will be carried out using mobile carriageway closures with traffic running in a convoy system between 10am to 3pm, closing each lane alternately.
A Highways Agency spokesman said: “Detection loops, like the ones being installed on the A5 at Hockliffe, are located on motorways and trunk roads across the country to monitor traffic flow.
“The information is used to keep road users informed about real time traffic conditions, such as delays due to incidents or congestion, so that they can plan their journeys ahead.
“The existing detectors at Hockliffe have been there for many years and need to be replaced.
“This replacement work requires cutting into the road and due to the level of noise this will cause, we are carrying out work during the day to avoid disturbing local residents.
“Work is taking place avoiding peak times to minimise disruption to road users. We would like to thank road users in Hockliffe for their patience.”
