Budding historians in Wing are uniting to dig up gardens across the village in a bid to discover more about Buckinghamshire’s history.
The Wing Heritage and Archaeology Project held its first of many community digs on Saturday, which aims to answer some questions about the village, with the help of Wings local community.
Councillor Sarah Roe, vice-chair of Wing Parish Council, said: “Despite the weather on Saturday it was a successful day.
“We found an 18th century floor surface which we think was a footpath of some kind and a gravel pit from around the time of the 12th century.
“Our finds included a George III penny, many animal bones and teeth, roof tiles with peg holes, medieval mortar and pots from mid 20th century right back to around the 1100s.
“We are still awaiting the full report but it has already started filling in missing information on what was happening in that part of the village.”
Wing Parish Council Neighbourhood Plan committee is working with Archaeological Services and Consultancy Ltd, BucksArchaeological Society and Leighton Buzzard District Archaeological Society to organise 27 community digs in Wing and Burcott from now until June.
Ms Roe added: “We have a community walk on June 23 around the village and another two are planned for July. We are also looking for any information that people have about the village for another part of the project.”
Other events coming up include walking the bounds with Leighton Buzzard and District Archaeological and Historical Society on May 5, a dig at Southcott Village in Linslade from June 8 and Beds Geology Group AGM analysing All Saints’ Church, Wing on September 22.
