David Minister blazed his way to victory in the final of Leighton Buzzard Golf Club’s Autumn Bowl – by beating his own club captain in the final of the competition.

David, a Retired firefighter and 12-handicap golfer now in his fourth year as a member of the Plantation Road club, was a hole up at the halfway stage of his final against 2012 club captain John Preston, despite the former superstore boss playing to level par during the first nine holes.

Based at the Bletchley fire station before hanging up his helmet, 54-year-old David powered to victory with three holes to spare to claim his first major title in the 16 years since taking up golf.

The event gets underway in the autumn each year, with the final eventually played after a series of knock-out rounds.

David then collected his trophy at a presentation evening hosted by Leighton skipper Preston at the end of his year in office.

Despite losing in the final of the Autumn Bowl, skipper Preston had a successful year both on and off the course.

He won nine and drew four of his 17 inter-club matches during the year, while also raising £18,700 for his local branch of MENCAP, whose volunteers provide support for around 35 children in the area.
