People living in and around Clarence Road who have suffered intermittent distruption for months because of roadworks faced further troubles when a burst water pipe forced the newly laid tarmac in Leighton to be dug up again.

A three-way traffic control system has been put in place by Anglian Water on Friday December 21 after a hole in the road was made to fix the underground pipe.

LBO reader Simon Cloake who got in touch about the recent problems, said: “No sooner has Clarence Road had new tarmac laid it has since been dug up!

“The water problem was fixed on Saturday 22, but by Boxing Day, the hole & traffic lights are still there.”

Anglian Water aim for the road to be open again by next week at the latest, but before that have put in measures to fix the problem by causing as little disruption as possible.

An Anglian Water spokesman said: “We always return the road to the state it was in beforehand. Generally because of the time of year and the availabilty we have, a permanent reinstatement is better, rather than having to come back to dig up the road again.

“We haven’t forgotten about it, it will be sorted as soon as possible.

“We hope to fully get it back to normal and open the road either later this week or early next week.”
