Building is set to begin on a new lower school site in Leighton Buzzard after planning permission was granted.
Work will now commence shortly on the new Greenleas Lower School site after final planning permission for the new building was granted at a meeting of Central Bedfordshire Council’s Development Management Committee on Wednesday.
The new school site will provide 300 new school places as well as a nursery on the Sandhills Development, off Kestrel Way. A phased programme of building is due to commence in November with new site welcoming pupils in time for the start of the new academic year in September 2013.
Cheryl Johnson, Head Teacher at Greenleas Lower School, said: “This is excellent news and another significant step along the way to us opening the new school site on the Sandhills estate.
“Everyone at the school is excited and we are very much looking forward to welcoming local pupils to our new site when it opens in September next year.”
Speaking after the decision, Councillor Mark Versallion, said: “I am pleased that work can now begin on building this new school site. The extra school places are very much needed in this area of Leighton Buzzard and will ensure that local children are able to access high quality education close to home.
