A man impersonating a police officer has prompted authorities to warn the public against giving personal details over the phone.

Bedfordshire Police are warning people to be extra vigilant when answering the phone after officers have received a number of reports where residents have received a call from a man impersonating a police officer.

The caller asks for bank details and claims to be investigating fraudulent online transactions on bank cards.

Bedfordshire Police say they will never ask people to divulge bank account details over the telephone and warn that if you have concerns about your bank account, please contact your bank directly.

If an unexpected caller is claiming to be from the police, ask for their name and number, contact the non-emergency number 101. Bedfordshire Police will confirm if an officer has contacted you.

If you have any suspicions terminate the call and take extra precautions with your personal information and if in doubt dial 999.
