Bomb drama in Wing was due to garden makeover in Bedford

A back garden makeover in Bedford blew up into a bomb squad drama in Wing when workmen unearthed three unexploded wartime missiles.

The crew from Boss Landscapes dug up the rusted metal cylinders from underneath the lawn of a house in Bedford’s Bushmead Avenue on Monday.

“They didn’t really know what they were so they passed them round a bit then chucked them in the skip,” said the Biggleswade company owner Nigel Wheatley.

But one worker, John Gunnell, thought the objects might be of historic interest so he popped two of them in his boot to show friends and family.

It was only when he called into his local social club for a pint on the way home that the drama exploded.

June Tobin, landlady of Wing Sports and Social Club, said: “He mentioned these things that he’d dug up and took us out to his car to see them. Some of the older members recognised them instantly and realised they could be highly dangerous.

“The club was really packed that night. We had an indoor bowls game and two darts matches so there was about 100 people. It was a bit scary.”

Police and the bomb squad were called to the social club and also to Bushmead Avenue after learning the third bomb was still nestling in the skip.

Nigel said: “It was chaos. They emptied the skip and searched all over the garden in case there were more of the things buried there.

“At one stage they wanted to evacuate the street for 200 metres around the scene in case there was an explosion.”

Eventually bomb experts decided the devices were missile heads that, although they contained explosives, were too old and damaged to be of danger.

Officers remained at the scene on Tuesday, preventing Nigel’s crew from going back to work on the garden.

“I lost a day’s money but it’s worth it to know the street was safe!” he said.

Meanwhile John Gunnell is said to be red-faced about his decision to take home the missiles.

Nigel said: “It was a bit silly of him . His ‘punishment’ will be refilling the entire skip after the bomb squad officers emptied it all out!”

It is not known whether the missiles had landed in Bushmead Avenue during the war and been buried there ever since, or whether they had been hidden there later. The current owners knew nothing about them.

RSPCA issue advice to pet owners in Leighton Buzzard after reports of suspected poisoning incidents

The RSPCA are encouraging pet owners in Leighton Buzzard to keep an eye on their animals’ well-being after they received reports of suspected poisoning incidents.

The animal welfare charity is also asking people in the area to check where they keep their pesticides and chemicals, including antifreeze.

The advice comes after a resident, who did not want to be named, from Bideford Green contacted the LBO to warn people about possible animal poisoning in the area.

He became concerned after his cat was taken to the vets and was told it had it been poisoned.

He said: “I want people to be aware of what may be happening in the area and I want to know if anyone else has been affected by this.

“We had to take our cat to the vets at the weekend and we found out it had been poisoned, our neighbours cat has also been poisoned, and there were two dead pigeons on our neighbours driveway.

“It seems a bit strange to me that these birds are suddenly dying like this, and the cats are being poisoned, maybe it is something they are eating from the grass or the water that is poisoning them.”

The RSPCA are aware of the reports and has asked anyone with information about what has happened to contact the RSPCA’s appeal line on 0300 123 8018.

A spokesperson for the charity said: “The RSPCA has been made aware of reports of suspected poisoning incidents in Leighton Buzzard. It can be heart-breaking to lose a much-loved family pet in this way, and our sympathies are with the owners.

“We do not know at this stage if these incidents were accidental or deliberate, but would ask for everyone in the area to check where they keep their pesticides and chemicals including antifreeze and make sure it is secure and out of the way of animals, especially cats. People should check their car radiators for leaks too.

“Poisoning animals in the way alleged is an offence under the Animal Welfare Act. If you suspect that your pet has been poisoned - whether deliberately or not - you should take them to a vet immediately. If possible and safe to do so, you should take a sample of what the animal has ingested, or the container.

“Signs of poisoning can be seen anything from 30 minutes after a cat has ingested the chemical, though it can be two or three days before signs of kidney failure are seen. The signs of poisoning can include vomiting, seeming depressed or sleepy, appearing drunk and uncoordinated, seizures, and difficulty breathing.

“We would encourage animal-owners who live in the area to keep an eye on their animals’ well being and if they are showing symptoms of poisoning get them veterinary treatment immediately.”

The incident was reported to Bedfordshire Police on Monday morning.

A spokesperson for the force said: “We received a call at around 10.45am to reports of what is believed to be animal poisoning in Bideford Green, Leighton Buzzard.

“We have liaised with the RSPCA and the informant has been advised to report the incidents to them in the first instance. We have also submitted the information to our intelligence team.”

Rivals face shoot-out to decide the fate of Beds knock-out Cup

Leighton Buzzard golfers are facing a Sunday shoot-out with rivals to win the final of a Bedfordshire competition the club has lost on three occasions in the past nine years.

The Plantation Road club team has reached the final of the Bedfordshire Mid-Handicap knock-out where they will face Bedford Golf Club at the Beds & County course on Sunday (Oct 22).

Their fourth final appearance in less than a decade was secured with a victory over Aspley Guise in dramatic style, the clash being decided in “extra time” after the teams were level after five matches.

Debutant Dan Latimer got Leighton off to a flying start, winning by three holes before colleague Darren Valentine lost narrowly.

Andy Jenkins then battled back from being three down to halve his match before Sam Messenger carded a four hole victory with some outstanding golf.

Young Josh Banwell needed a half from his final match, but after losing by a hole and the teams tied, “reloaded” for a sudden-death play-off – winning with a par on the second extra hole.

Says team captain Paul Ellam: “With three of our regulars unable to play, Dan and Andy stepped in and did a fantastic job.”

Sunday’s final opponents The Bedford have not lost a match all season.

Leighton golfer Brandon Waddington, pictured with dad Jason, has been named Order of Merit winner in the Vale junior golf league after completing all his five matches undefeated.

Brandon, 15, a student at Vandyke was also Captain of the Bedfordshire Schools team that beat three other counties for the coveted McPartlin trophy, and was highly praised for his leadership skills.

Brandon took up golf six years ago with a handicap of 54.

Coached by Leighton assistant professional Wayne Hugo, he now plays off 12.

Steve Shepherd is the new holder of Leighton’s Austen Farrell trophy, his 40 point haul beating Tony Swain by two shots.

Gift experience day at Silverstone is full of speed and thrills

If the man in your life loves cars and wants to drive a fast one, then there is no better place than Silverstone near Towcester.

And no, I’m not being sexist. I was invited to try out the taster day for a brand new product, the TrackAttack experience day, and all nine drivers were men.

They spent the day driving some of the fastest and most exciting cars in the business on the world famous F1 track near Buckingham and Towcester.

Not only did they release their inner James Bond in an Aston Martin, but they took the wheel of a Ferrari, raced one another in Formula Silverstone single seater race cars and then tackled an obstacle course in a Caterham.

Fast cars do have testosterone appeal and the guys on the taster day had travelled from far and wide for the experience - in England from Cambridge, Manchester, Gloucestershire and Buckinghamshire, and from abroad America, Poland and Israel.

This is not a cheap experience (£778), and the guys, ranging in age from their 20s through to 50s, were successful businessmen indulging themselves in something special.

But this is just one of the experiences available to buy as gifts for birthdays, special occasions and Christmas and there are others which cost far less.

Not wanting to take the wheel myself on this TrackAttack, I took along my son, who said the day had fully met his expectations and he would love to do it again.

The day began with breakfast of bacon rolls and cookies, followed by a full briefing from professional racing driver and host Robert Barff then straight onto the southern part of the Grand Prix circuit for a whizz around in the Aston Martin V8 Vantage.

Kitted out with helmets, the guys had elite instructors with them, who drove the first laps, before they took the wheel themselves.

Next up came the Ferarri V8 F430, again with an instructor taking the wheel initially. The general consensus was that this was a really lovely car to drive and easier because by this time the drivers knew the track and the corners.

We were then taken into Towcester for a two course lunch before returning for the Formula Silverstone single seater experience.

Robert took the guys through the controls and an explanation of what the different flags meant, then they all got into racing overalls and a different helmet - this one with a visor - before climbing into the racing cars. Cameras were attached to these cars so that everyone would have a video of their racing experience. Lead cars took them around the track a few times before they pulled away and the nine guys were left to drive around the track themselves.

From the viewing tower I had a great view of the entire track and so saw the car in front of my son skid to a stop, and another go off the track onto the grass.

But safety is paramount at Silverstone with trained instructors, marshals in the pit, every corner is watched, screens monitor everything, and these were minor incidents that were soon rectified by the drivers themselves.

Next up was a trip in the minibus to am asphalted area where cones had been set up to enable the guys to try out their handling of the Caterham.

The day ended with sausage rolls and cake and the presentation of medals and Driver of the Day.

Details for the TrackAttack and all other gift experiences available at Silverstone, ranging in price from £45 upwards, can be found on the website, www.silverstone.co.uk

Wonderland in Leighton Buzzard

It is a story which has been told many times and now it is about to get a new make-over in a show which is to be screened at Leighton Buzzard Library Theatre.

The Royal Opera House’s production of Alice in Wonderland is to be screened on Monday, October 23.

Follow Alice down the rabbit hole in Christopher Wheeldon’s exuberant ballet, inspired by Lewis Carroll’s much-loved book.

At a garden party on a sunny afternoon, Alice is surprised to see her parents’ friend, Lewis Carroll, transform into a white rabbit.

When she follows him down a rabbit hole, events become curiouser and curiouser.

As Alice journeys through Wonderland, she encounters countless strange creatures. She’s swept off her feet by the charming Knave of Hearts, who’s on the run for stealing tarts. Confusion piles upon confusion. Then Alice wakes with a start. Was it all a daydream?

Christopher Wheeldon’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland burst on to the stage in 2011 in an explosion of colour, stage magic and inventive, sophisticated choreography.

Joby Talbot’s score combines contemporary soundworlds with sweeping melodies that gesture to ballet scores of the 19th century.

Tickets for the screening cost between £13 and £15. It starts at 7.15pm.

These can be booked by visiting www.leightonbuzzardlibrarytheatre.co.uk or by calling 0300 300 8125

The crime and anti-social hotspots in Leighton Buzzard revealed

Waitrose in Waterborne Walk has been highlighted in a police report for being the worst spot for anti-social behaviour in Leighton Buzzard during the past three months.

A Beds Police quarterly report presented to the town council’s police liaison committee shows there were 34 incidents between July 1 and September 31 – although the majority were on the roof of the shopping area rather than in the store itself.

That was worse than the other top 5 ‘high demand’ locations for policing, with Johnson Drive having 29 incidents, McDonald’s Billington Road 26, Leighton Buzzard High Street 23 and Tesco Vimy Road 21.

As for crime hot spots, Redwood Glade suffered 7 incidents in the last 3 months, with Billington Road 6, Leighton Buzzard High Street 6, Market Square 6, and Waterdell 6.

A spokesman for Waitrose said: “The vast majority of the incidents relate to people climbing on to the roof of the shopping centre, which our store offices overlook. We have a responsibility for people’s safety and to report these incidents to the police.”

Incidents of note listed in the report included:

July: Advice given to drivers ignoring the bus lane; stabbing incident involving homeless male in North Street; youths smoking drugs in Blenheim Crescent; street drinker/drug user moved out of town for sniffing lighter fluid; and shoplifter identified through CCTV for theft from Angelica’s.

August: Group of youths spoken to in the car park of The Vynes, nuisance youths at Tesco and Wellington Way; search of a male on a moped potentially in possession of a weapon; reports of drug dealing in King Street; small cannabis factory found on canal boat, youths on bikes moved out of town; street drinkers congregating on Pulford Rec.

September: Homeless male being aggressive in Market Square; youths on bikes moved out of High Street.

Back in July the police held an engagement meeting to outline all of the changes to policing in the area and also to identify what locals considered were their priorities.

On Thursday, Councillors, the MP, Street Watch, Pub Watch, Shop Watch, and Home Watch representatives from Leighton Buzzard and surrounding villages have been invited to Dunstable Police Station for an update on progress.

For the Leighton area the problems identified were shoplifting in the town centre, and low level anti-social behaviour with youths on pushbikes in the Sandhills, The Planets, Meadow Way, and Brooklands areas.

Firefighters attended a chimney fire in Eaton Bray on Tuesday afternoon.

Crews from Dunstable and Luton attended the blaze at a property in School Lane at 4.54pm.

They used an aerial platform platform, 9m ladder, chimney rods, stirrup pumps, two thermal imaging cameras and a hose reel to extinguish the fire.

Although the cause has not been confirmed, the fire service is reminding residents to get their chimneys swept before lighting them if they have been unused for some time to avoid anything that has fallen into it catching fire.

SW Beds boundary changes up for discussion

Bedfordshire’s MPs could find themselves with new wards as the consultation into boundary changes opened on Tuesday.

The county currently has six constituencies, which will remain, although boundaries are set to change to ensure a relatively equal number of voters in each.

Launching its consultation the Boundary Commission for England said: “In our initial proposals, we noted that the 439,574 electorate of the ceremonial County of Bedfordshire, comprising the unitary authorities of Luton, Bedford and Central Bedfordshire, resulted in an allocation of 5.9 constituencies.

“With six whole constituencies, the average electorate of the constituencies in Bedfordshire would be 73,262. Although towards the lower end of the permitted electorate range, we considered that it would be possible to create six whole constituencies without any need for the county to be grouped with another county or counties. We therefore decided to treat Bedfordshire as a sub-region in its own right in the construction of constituencies.

“Among the county-wide counter-proposals, it was noted that the Conservative Party supported only one of our proposed constituencies (North East Bedfordshire), proposing ‘minor changes’ to the others, whereas the Labour Party supported our proposals in their entirety.”

Under the new proposals, South West Bedfordshire will gain Aspley and Woburn despite proposals from the then MP for Bedford Richard Fuller at a public hearing in Luton earlier this year, that they should be in the Mid Bedfordshire constituency.

“Our assistant commissioners noted that it would not be possible to also transfer this ward to Mid Bedfordshire from South West Bedfordshire in addition to the Barton-le-Clay ward without further consequential knock-on effects elsewhere,” said the Commission.

Member of Parliament for South West Bedfordshire, Andrew Selous, who spoke on day one at the public hearing in Luton, welcomed the retention of the town of Dunstable in the South West Bedfordshire constituency, but he objected to the inclusion of the Caddington ward in Luton South, highlighting the connection of local villages, and schools in particular, with Dunstable.

The Commission says in its report: “Our assistant commissioners noted that, apart from the issue of Houghton Regis, very little comment was received regarding our proposed South West Bedfordshire constituency and that there was support for the continued inclusion of the towns of Dunstable and Leighton Buzzard in the constituency.

“In view of our proposed changes to the Mid Bedfordshire constituency, no change to the two Luton constituencies (except the name change of Luton North and Houghton Regis), and its location in the south of the county, our assistant commissioners recommended that no further changes be made to the South West Bedfordshire constituency”.

The consultation is now open until 11 December 2017.

Cali-R promoter Sid Hudson’s gig on Friday, October 27 will have special guests when former Dunstablian Bob Underwood and his wife Mav return from the United States.

Bob, a former Beecroft and Brewers Hill School pupil who used to live in Stuart Street and was a regular Cali-goer in the 60s and 70s, emigrated to New Jersey in 1979 and still lives at the Jersey Shore, having retired three years ago after 32 years as a vice-president and senior administrator in three New York City hospitals.

The couple kept a place in Luton and will be based there for a month before returning to the US in time for Thanksgiving on November 23.

The gig, at United Services Club, Dunstable, will feature Sid playing soul, Tamla and reggae and is the precursor to the last two Cali-R events of the year: the Christmas Party on Saturday, December 2, at Dunstable Conference Centre, High Street North; and the New Year’s Eve Spectacular on – wait for it! – New Year’s Eve, at the Rufus Centre, Flitwick.

The Christmas Party features the American Four Tops, who headlined in 2009 before a sell-out crowd, keeping alive the music of one of Motown’s favourite groups, but also including music from the cream of soul acts, including Sam Cooke, Ben E. King, the Drifters, Barry White, Sam and Dave and the Temptations.

As always with Cali-R Christmases, there will be a lot of festive surprises with Luton’s very own former World Champion Santa, Ron Horniblew, attending.

The New Year Spectacular will feature Sid on the decks with all the best of soul, Tamla and reggae. Tickets for the United Services Club (£9.50) and the Christmas event (£18) are available from Big Stuff, Queensway, Dunstable (01582 666678); Vinyl Revelations, Cheapside, Luton (01582 876391); and www.cali-r.com. A Leighton Buzzard couple were left shocked this morning as three youths with gloves and a screwdriver were caught snooping around their property on CCTV.

Jack Dean, 69, who lives in Columba Drive with his wife, Bernice, 65, was alerted by a ringing notification on his phone at 3.59am (Thursday, October 19) telling them that someone was near their side door.

The couple’s doorbell, which has a camera and motion sensor in it, had filmed the three youths coming out of their back garden gate, immediately sending the footage to Jack’s phone with a loud notification, as well as ringing in the house.

Jack said: “My phone went and I immediately switched it on, as it automatically receives it (camera footage).

“There were three youths and one of them was with a big screwdriver and straight away held his hand up.

“You can see one face very clearly.

“My wife turned all the lights on, trying to look out the window, but couldn’t see anybody, and I sent the video to Bedfordshire Police.

“When the doorbell started ringing inside the house, I think that’s why they started to cover their faces up.

“We’re just a bit concerned that three low life youths like that - well they looked like youths - were walking round at night with a screwdriver and gloves!”

Jack believes that youths had climbed over his back garden fence and then tried to exit through the back gate past the side door, otherwise the doorbell camera and sensor would also have caught them entering the garden.

Jack added: “They were hanging around our street at 4am and obviously my wife is quite upset.

“At the top of our close we are quite vulnerable, as we back onto the brook. But we are a close little community - everyone tells each other what’s going on.

“My wife spoke to our neighbours this morning but no-one else saw anything.

“She’s always criticised me for being Mr gadget man - but not this time!”

A Bedfordshire Police spokeswoman, said: “At around 5.24am this morning (October 19) we received a report of a burglary at a property in Columbia Drive, Leighton Buzzard, where three people were reportedly seen in the garden of the property.

“When we received the call, the people had left the property. Therefore, an appointment has been scheduled to visit the victims later this week.

“We have received CCTV from the victims, and after speaking to them to obtain some further details, officers will begin an investigation and will look at CCTV as part of their enquiries.

“Anyone with any information is asked to contact police on 101 quoting reference number 38 of 19 October.”

Leighton Buzzard golfers have chipped in with a donation of £3,300 for a local organisation which provides support for people in the area suffering from multiple sclerosis.

More than 70 players took part in a charity event organised by Leighton Buzzard Golf Club past captains Adrian Stephenson and Steve Leng on behalf of the Olde Foresters Golf Society, a group which in the past ten years has raised more than £17,000 for local worthy causes.

There are around 100,000 people in the UK who have been diagnosed with MS and the Chiltern Multiple Sclerosis Centre provides invaluable support for scores facing mobility and other medical challenges as a result of the neurological condition which impacts on the human nerve system.

“We have first hand experience of the impact MS has on people and we are only too pleased to be able to help fund the Chiltern Centre which supports sufferers and their families,” said Adrian.

The golfing event which raised the donation along with an auction of gifts was won by chartered accountant Brian Carter, whose 41 point haul beat retired airline captain Tony Simpson on countback. Mark Knight was third with 40 points while wife Kate won the Ladies prize with 34 points, one more than runner-up Rosie Hartnell.

There were nearest the pin prizes for Keith Cox, Kate Knight, Shane Bentley and Jeremy.

Monies raised at the Foresters charity day and other functions at the golf club will be formally be presented to the Chiltern MS unit before the end of the year.
