The Friends of Linslade Woods attended a gathering of site wardens, volunteers and local residents on Friday, May 25 when Leighton-Linslade’s new mayor, Councillor Alan Brandham unveiled a new interpretation board at the entrance to the woods near Alwins Field.
The new interpretation board provides information on local woodland wildlife and history and is one of three which have recently been installed at entrances to the woods. The artwork for the boards was professionally designed and created by one of the Friends, John Trotman, and was partly funded by a town council donation. The actual construction was carried out by another Friend, David Savage.
Ken Barry of Friends, of Linslade Woods, said: “We are very proud of our new interpretation boards and hope that many more people will come and see them. Linslade Woods are rich in all kinds of wildlife from huge trees to tiny insects.
“Over 100 different plants have been recorded including many orchids. The woods are also home to many birds, bats and butterflies. We hope that the information provided by the boards will help people to learn a lot more about the history and wildlife of the woods, and may inspire them to become more involved in caring for the woods as a wildlife haven for all to enjoy. We are very grateful for the generosity of the town council for providing part of the funding for the boards.”
The Friends of Linslade Woods has a regular programme of action days, wildlife walks and other events throughout the year. New volunteers are very welcome to take part and further information can be obtained from Ken Barry on 01525 372036.
