HE may be the fastest man on the planet but a Leighton resident made sure the town made its mark on the Olympic Stadium well before Usain Bolt when she took part in a Gold Challenge Event last month.
Vicky Martin, of New Road, got a the chance to set foot on the Olympic track in Stratford when she ran the 100m challenge in front of 20,000 people to raise awareness for the PACE Centre.
The Aylesbury-based charity plays a vital role in providing intensive programmes for children with physical disabilities such as cerebral palsy, and Vicky leapt at the chance to raise awareness to their cause.
“The children inspire me every day,” said the 32-year-old, who is a community fundraiser for the charity. “What we take for granted by running the 100m would be an unbelievable achievement for them. “It was a once in a lifetime opportunity and I am grateful to PACE for allowing me to achieve this ambition.”
Former Cedars Upper pupil Vicky only managed to come seventh out of the nine runners, however fellow PACE runner Mohammed Ahmed managed to seal first place, raising nearly £2,000 in the process.
And despite finishing near the back of the field, Vicky gained a small consolation prize – sharing a quick snap with England rugby legend Austin Healey.
