Work has started to cut down commuter parking in the residential streets around Leighton Buzzard station.

Following feedback from residents, Central Beds Council are implementing a scheme including parking permits and new road lining to prevent commuters clogging up residential streets around the station.

Wing Road and Mentmore Road will be covered by a parking zone, with permits for residents. The places where residents can park will be marked and everywhere else there will be double yellow lines.

Faulkner’s Way will be covered by a parking zone with double yellow lines at the Stoke Road junction and Harcourt Close will have single yellow lines. The parking restrictions in Harcourt Close mean that people cannot park on one side of the road between 8.30am and 12pm and on the other side between 1pm and 5pm.

This is similar to restricutions on Grange Close, Orchard Drive and Woodside Way where here will be single yellow lines throughout.

The St Mary’s Way, Beech Grove and Hawthorn Close area will be covered with a parking zone, with permits for residents and the junction between St Mary’s Way and Soulbury Road will be double yellow lined.

Southcott Village, from Chelsea Green to the end of the road, will be covered by a parking zone with permits for residents, while its junction with Chelsea Green will be double yellow lined and Epsom Close will have single yellow lines.

Councillor Budge Wells said: “The lines are being laid and signs going up now and will be enforced from early September.

“Residents will get a letter to explain how to apply for a permit if they’re planning to park on the road.

“If you need any help, please contact the Parking Office either by calling 0300 300 8308 or emailing parking@centralbedfordshire.gov.uk.”

“While we’re very keen to cut down the unacceptable levels of commuter parking in these areas, we’re also working with the commuters themselves to encourage different methods of travel.

“Our Travel Choices team are regularly at the station helping people plan their journeys, whether by foot, bike or bus.

“There are a range of schemes and incentives on offer to encourage people to travel sustainably including a liftshare and wheels to work scheme.

“The award-winning Dash Direct bus service has been designed around the needs of commuters and is very popular and the number of people cycling to the station have almost doubled since Leighton Buzzard secured cycling Town Status.”
