Driver thrown from his bus

Speed limit changes will only be implemented when it is too late, say campaigners following a collision which saw a driver thrown from a bus.

The incident involving a Mini and a Red Rose out-of-service bus happened on the A418 in Wing yesterday at 6am.

Residents from Mill Cottages have been campaigning for two years to get the national speed limit on the road to be brought down to 40mph.

One campaigner, who did not wish to be named, said: “We heard a loud bang and all of the neighbours ran out to help. The bus had gone across the road after the collision, up a bank, over a ditch, through a hedge and then into a field.

“It was awful. It looked like a scene from a horror film. I thought someone had died because we have been campaigning for years about this.

“I don’t know how somebody wasn’t killed. It is an accident waiting to happen.

“Apparently it doesn’t meet criteria because no-one has been killed outside our house yet. It seems like they are waiting for someone to be killed before they do anything, which I think is disgusting.

A spokesman for Red Rose Travel bus service said their driver was taken to A&E suffering from serious back and shoulder injuries.

A spokesman for Transport for Bucks said: “In 2013, a decision was taken not to carry out any further speed limit reviews but to prioritise resources on road maintenance.

“The collision history at Mill Cottages for 23 years revealed that there had been just three slight injury collisions in the last 13 years.

“Average speeds south of the cottages, nearer Lower Wingbury Farm were 44mph, with only 15% of drivers exceeding 50mph.

“As a result there are no plans to review the speed limit along this stretch of road.”

> The female driver of the Mini was arrested at the scene.
