Outgoing chairman is fully behind Town boss

Iain McGregor’s final act as stand-in Leighton Town chairman was to employ the man most fans wanted to manage their team this season – and he is certain he made the right decision.

McGregor is expected to stand down as chairman at the club’s annual general meeting this week and his successor, so far unnamed, will be revealed.

But whoever it is, he will inherit a club far happier than just a few weeks ago, with McGregor welcoming Craig Wells back as Town’s boss sevens months after he quit the job.

McGregor admits that he was disappointed with the way in which Wells and assistant manager Richard Batten left last November, but he is more than happy to let bygones be bygones.

“I told him at the time what I thought about him leaving,” said McGregor. “But he’s a good man. I like him a lot and he’s the best man for the job. I just don’t like people walking away.

“We had some excellent applicants for the job but we felt that he was the best. He is a very good manager and has our full support.”

McGregor made it clear to any candidates for the job that they would have to put a squad together with no financial backing.

But that did not put off Wells who, despite leaving the club, stayed in contact with McGregor and made his desire to return clear.

“We had a good chat on the phone for around 90 minutes and he made his case very well,” McGregor said. “Expectations will be raised, but he is capable of doing a very good job.”
