A bridegroom was slashed by a broken glass wielded by a friend he had invited to join his wedding celebrations.

The friend, Ilie Craciun, a Romanian who was living in Little Billington, lashed out and attacked Nicolae Haidau after a drunken row turned nasty.

On Thursday at Luton Crown Court, Craciun, 34, was jailed for seven years when he appeared for sentence having earlier been found guilty by a jury of wounding with intent.

Sentencing him Judge Barbara Mensah told Craciun, of Slapton Road: “You are clearly a dangerous young man.”

The court heard it was on May 16, 2010 that Mr Haidau and his bride were married and he was continuing the celebrations at the home of another Romanian in North Street, Leighton Buzzard.

Mr Haidau had invited Craciun to the celebrations and as the evening wore on the bride went to bed.

The court heard a drunken row broke out between the defendant and the victim over the music which led to a sudden explosion of violence.

The defendant grabbed a glass and went to smash Mr Haidau in the face or neck with it.

Luckily he was able to raise an arm to defend himself but was badly cut.

The court heard Craciun made off, but because he was so heavily stained in his victim’s blood he came to the attention of a CCTV operator who tracked his movements through the town until he was arrested by police.

The court heard that having been granted bail, the defendant subsequently went on the run and months passed before he was arrested in London.

During his trial Craciun had tried to make out Mr Haidau had inflicted the injuries to himself.

Judge Mensah told him “You decided to slash him in a fit of annoyance over the music.”
