A familiar face is back in charge at Leighton Town - and he cannot wait for the football season to get back underway again.
Craig Wells made a dramatic return to Bell Close on Friday as he was unveiled as the new boss, taking over from Paul Copson.
Wells has kept a low profile since leaving the club in December last year, but admitted he’s delighted to be back.
He said: “I made a commitment to start to get the club back on the right glidepath after a rather dark set of times last season.
“But that’s where the pessimism now needs to stop and we collectively should get back on the front foot starting right now.
“What I do ask – and this is my one and only request – is that we ditch all the doom and gloom.
“We must change the mood of the whole place and get behind what I think could be the beginning of a new way forward, starting right now.
“Stick with us now, me, the staff and the players need you big time.
“I apologise that it has taken a little longer than expected to finalise as the discussions around my club sponsored vehicle took some time.
“However, I’m told they’ve got the stabilisers off it now and I’m due to pick it up over the weekend!”
Wells also confirmed Charlie Cunningham, Sean Bishop Stuart Deaton and Jake Bewley had committed their futures to the club.
Iain McGregor, who sits on the Executive board, said: “We’re so pleased to have Craig back at the club. We had a lot of people come forward for the job, and Craig was one of them.
“He has never said a bad word about the club, even during the hard times last season. It’s just a shame we lost him for a while.
“I’ve had a few conversations with him about the job, what he wants and where he wants to improve, but we can’t wait for the season to start now.
“It’ll be a challenge without a doubt - he has to try and improve the squad and bring on players who are willing to play for next to nothing, but we’re confident he can take this club where it should go.”
