Parents of Leighton’s multiples say it’s not double trouble, but double the love all thanks to a club that brings support to families with twins.

Last year Leighton Buzzard Twins Club, which has been running since the 1980s, saw more than 20 mums pass through the door with their twins looking for help and support with their new bundle of joy, times two.

Lucy Millar, 37, of Clarence Road, is the treasurer of the group and says she doesn’t know what she would have done without it.

She said: “I think I would have missed out. I wouldn’t have met my best friend and I would have missed that support system; the fact you can go and spend time with people in the same situation who have the knowledge and background of what it is like.”

“When I first joined it was lovely to be somewhere where people didn’t look at the twins and make comments about how lovely they are and how gorgeous. Instead I could have a cup of tea that didn’t go cold and speak to people who understood how I was feeling and could say with confidence that it would get better.

“It does the children good because they realise they are twins. My two have just started understanding that .

“You do get people stop you and comment and if it keeps happening you worry that the children might think they’re odd. So letting them see there are others like them really helps.”

The club meets fortnightly at Salvation Army Hall on Lammas Walk and welcomes newborn babies up to preschool age, as well as expectant mums.

Sarah Austin, 40, of Houghton Regis, said: “They are my IVF miracle babies. I waited ten years for them. There is not anything around here like that.

“We have all been through it so we are supporting each other and would encourage everyone to come along, even before the twins are born.

“I was looking for support from people who have through it and knew what I was talking about and now I have made some great friends.
