From winning poetry competitions when he was just eight years old to fast becoming a ground-breaking UK rapper; a talented lad from Leighton is freestyling his way to the top.

Lucan Mills has been making his transformation into an upcoming rap artist and lyricist ever since becoming the champion of UK Channel U competition in 2007.

He is now celebrating the release of his debut single ‘Last Words’.

“It has been a journey but it is still going,” says Lucan.

“I have been lucky enough to meet a lot of people and look at their experiences and to be able to watch and learn what they do so you can be the best you can.”

Since winning the 2007 UK Channel U competition, Lucan has gone from strength to strength while performing at various events with Chipmunk, G-Unit, Ironik, Kano, N Dubz, Tinie Tempah and most recently freestyling on-stage with Ed Sheeran.

And now, as he continues to work on new material in the studio, Lucan says he is honoured to have the opportunity to be expressing himself through his music as he begins performing across the country.

Lucan said: “Poetry gave me the skills to write and as soon as I could I started spending hours and hours in the studio bringing that music, skill and poetry all together.

“I love that now with some of the gigs the reaction I get from the crowd is just amazing. To think that people are coming to see you and can sing your songs back to you.

“We just hope that it is all going to really take off, so we are pushing it as much as we can because we want everyone to hear us.”

The 23-year-old, who usually performs acoustic hip hop with a live band, says rappers have got a bad rap from the public in the past but that things are on the up.

“People tend to have a stereotype of that music in general, but it has got better. My music changes from how it sounds on the EP to when I am performing on stage with the band.”

The musician is now in the process of organising a day in the studio for children from care homes in the near future through Next Step Live to give young people the opportunities he missed out on.

Lucan said: “I think it is fundamental. If I had had something like that, to the get the opportunity to get into the studio at such a young age, it would have been amazing.

“So to be involved in something like this to give kids the opportunity to think about writing their songs is really exciting.”
