Clear out your car

The eye of the Law will be on car crime at Bucks beauty spots over the summer in a bid toto prevent the theft of valuables from cars.

Neighbourhood police, PCSOs and parking patrollers will be out in force as part of the Clear Car Campaign. They will be spotting cars with valuables left on the seats, noting the registration numbers and writing to the owners pointing out the risks of leaving things on view.

Beauty spots throughout the county will also be targeted with posters and leaflets, warning about the risks of theft and urging drivers to leave nothing on view.

In the past three years thefts from cars have reduced by around 10% - from 2,745 in 2010/11 to 2,544 in 2012/13. In 2011/12 the Aylesbury Vale saw 69 satellite navigation sets, 184 handbags/wallets and 32 laptops stolen from vehicles.

Susie Yapp, the county council’s Safer Bucks partnership manager, said that despite the encouraging trend motorists should not let down their guard.

“High value goods, like handbags, wallets, laptops and sat-navs, continue to be thieves’ favourite haul,” she said. “But leaving even a coat or sweatshirt on the seat is enough to persuade an opportunist thief that it’s worth breaking in.

“The message to motorists is clear - please don’t leave anything on show in your car.”
