A women’s group and a family business are encouraging people to sign a petition to ensure the Prime Minister doesn’t “turn back time on women’s equality”.
Oonagh Hagan, of Leighton-Linslade Women’s Group, has teamed up with a mother and daughter duo who own the Green House, Market Square, to support awareness day for women in the work place by hosting a 1950s style vintage tea party on Friday.
Jackie Burgess and her daughter Stephanie Taylor have been running the tea shop for four years and want to support Oonagh in her quest to bring the issue to the public’s attention.
Stephanie said: “It was not so long ago that women were viewed as home bodies, home makers and not much else.
“Not only are women in the work place but they are a staggering 66.5% of the overall work force and still manage to run a home and bring up the kids. Some in low income positions are being forced to resign their position due to the rising cost of child care, as it is no longer financially viable to work.
“The government’s approach to cutting the deficit is turning back time on women’s equality, essentially sending us back to the kitchen sink.”
Oonagh added: “Cuts are turning back time on women’s equality as the number of women out of work reaches record levels, the gap in pay between women and men is expected to widen and women here in Leighton/Linslade and across the UK find it harder to make ends meet.
“Come to our campaign between 10am and 5pm, have tea and cake and most importantly please sign our petition.”
