A house that went up in flames after a nearby van was set alight in Leighton has pushed police to call on the public for information.

The fire took hold in Marley Fields at around 12.50am on May 5 when a fire spread from a box van parked close to a house.

Damage was caused to the guttering and facia boards before it was extinguished and another property and a car parked close by were also caught up in the blaze.

The officer in charge of this investigation, Detective Constable Cathie Layton, is keen to trace anyone who may have witnessed anyone in the area acting suspiciously.

DC Layton said: “Luckily the resident was able to raise the alarm before the blaze spread further but the consequences of this fire could have been much worse. I would appeal to anyone in the area who saw or heard anything suspicious to contact the police to help trace the person responsible for this fire.”

If you have information relating to this crime, you can contact DC Layton, in confidence, on 01582 394329, or Bedfordshire Police on 101, or text information to 07786 200011.

Alternatively, you can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
