National regeneration and housing company Keepmoat has given primary school pupils a lesson in remaining safe near building sites while work is carried out to their school.

Pupils at Wingrave C of E Combined School attended the site safety assembly, hosted by Keepmoat Community Investment Manager Julian Sanz, to learn about the dangers of building sites and what measures staff take to stay safe.

Two pupils volunteered to try on site safety gear and then asked questions about what each item protected them from. A safety video was then shown highlighting what can happen when warnings are ignored and the dangers they could come into contact with, from loose scaffolding to chemicals.

The primary school is having replacement roof coverings fitted, as well as renewed fascias, cladding, gutters and down pipes. Work began at the end of March and is due to be completed by June, so ensuring pupils remain safe is extremely important.

Site manager Chris Cord said: “The safety message for schools close to where Keepmoat works is always an important one and, in this instance, because work is also being carried out to the actual school, it is important all pupils are aware of why ‘Keep Out’ means keep out.”

Following the talk pupils were set a drawing competition to design warning posters that would be displayed on Keepmoat site hoardings and around the school. Julian will return to the school in a few weeks time to judge the best posters and award art sets to the winners.
