Bedevilled Luton midfielder James Dance admitted he had expected to part ways with the Hatters this summer after spending most of his two-year spell with the club on the sidelines, writes Mark Wood.

The 26-year-old endured a miserable time with injury, fracturing a cheekbone before he suffered an injury that placed pressure on his navicular bone and he needed to have a screw inserted to alleviate it.

That injury sidelined Dance for almost a year as he made just 32 appearances, scoring four goals. On being let go, he said: “It wasn’t a surprise. Being injured for the last three managers would have been pushing it a bit.”

Dance endeared himself to Luton fans by racing back from his fractured cheekbone and donning a protective mask to play.

He said: “I missed a few games with fracturing my cheek.

“That was November time and then it was the middle of January I stopped playing through my ankle. The first six months I was personally quite happy with how I played, but since the middle of that first January it spiralled out of control from there.”

Dance never got a chance to play under new boss John Still as he spent two loan spells at Nuneaton Town, but was positive about his discussions with the Hatters manager, adding: “He has been really good to me the few conversations we’ve had.”
