Very few flood to environment agency event

A flooding workshop was held to teach people how to protect themselves against flooding.

But only three people from Leighton, including a town councillor, attended the Environment Agency’s meeting in Huntingdon.

They were invited as a result of volunteering at February’s flood alleviation
drop-in session at Beaudesert School.

Councillor Mike Bishop said: “My main concern is that, because our risk of severe flooding is relatively low, we would be overlooked at a time of crisis.

“I was able to get assurances from Environment Agency staff that this wouldn’t be the case and have been given a useful list of contacts to follow up.

“It was useful to hear how other groups of residents had organised themselves into local Flood Action Groups so that they could prepare, and respond to, flooding events.

“It soon became clear that the other groups had much more severe problems than we do, however, there is no room for complacency.

“Residents, particularly those close to the Clipstone Brook, have suffered from flooding in the past.

“I was pleased to find that one of the Leighton residents on the workshop had fitted flood protection barriers on his doors after being flooded several years ago.

“This was relatively inexpensive and had enabled him to keep his insurance premiums down.”

Advice on this is and other flood related information is available from the Environment Agency where you can also check whether your property is in a flood risk area and how to get early warnings from the Agency.
