Buzzards’ hopes of a top two finish this season are realistically over, but they restored some pride on Saturday with a fantastic 42-19 beating of Midlands Two East (South) leaders Huntingdon & District.
The bonus point win keeps Buzzards’ slender hopes of finishing second alive going into their final two games, starting away at struggling Biggleswade this Saturday.
However, even though they are unlikely to have anything to celebrate at Dunstablians on the final day, Buzzards did at least end their home campaign with a sensational victory.
They got off to a flying start against Huntingdon as Jack Micans picked up from the base of a scrum and out-paced the visiting back line to touch down in the corner.
Buzzards were playing some great rugby and the visitors could not keep up with them. And it wasn’t long before they scored a second try, this time from a catch drive from a line out as Nick Turney emerged with the ball.
After missing the first conversion attempt, Dan David successfully kicked the extras, soon followed by a penalty to make the score 15-0 with as many minutes played.
Some mistakes started to cost the home team as Huntingdon reduced the deficit with two penalties.
But Buzzards were at it again moments later with Ryan Fraser finishing off what he had started with their third try of the day.
Huntingdon ended the first half strongly, but they could not break down the Buzzards’ defence. In fact it was the home side who added another score, with Euan Irwin making sure of the bonus point to make it 25-6.
Graham McGill came on to replace David before the break, and he scored Buzzards’ next try early in the second period.
Huntingdon got their act together and scored a couple of quick tries while Fraser was in the sin bin.
But Buzzards had the last laugh on the day with tries from Jack Micans and Jack Whitehouse to make sure of victory, with Karl Evans adding the extras.
