Urban myth or kidnap attempt?

POLICE are asking parents to remain vigilant over reports of a white van trawling the area allegedly trying to kidnap children although it may be a hoax.

Currently, there is no police intelligence that the claims are actually true as the stories have been circulating on internet site Facebook but no actual victims have come forward to police.

Phone calls the police have received with the reports have all come from ‘a-friend-of-a-friend’ scenarios, but police say they have to log every call that they receive.

The story goes that a white van (one phone call said with an Asian driver, another with two white men) goes around the town’s schools and stops to ask a child the time. When the child stops the back doors of the van apparently fly open. The child is said to have ran away.

A police spokesman said: “We took a phone call on November 16 from someone who said that it had happened outside Gilbert Inglefield Middle School. No victims have called. No crime has been committed.”
