Leighton’s new ‘green gym’ facility on the horizon?

Leighton could be home to a new green gym facility used to encourage people to get fit outdoors.

The idea behind the outdoor gym is to enable people to keep fit who would not normally attend a conventional gym or sports centre – and it could be coming to Pages Park.

The cost of installation could range between £20,000 and £250,000, and, for example, ten items of equipment on a play surface would cost £30,000.

At a Leighton-Linslade Town Council meeting a number of funding options will be discussed including money identified from Sport England. One of the options will be for the partnership committee funding to pay up to £10,000 of the budget, with a Sport England grant topping it up.

If a facility costing between £50,000 and £250,000 was chosen, Sport England would expect one third of local funding support.

Pages Park master planning report revealed a number of issues residents and groups had, so a survey was distributed in order to find out suggestions from the public.

The report highlighted the benefits of keeping young people in sport and ensuring there was a range of facilities available and therefore a proposal for a green gym to be developed in Pages Park was put forward.

Play equipment for older children was also one of the recommended improvements made by the public.

At Thursday’s meeting, councillors on the partnership committee will consider allocating up to £10,000 (20 per cent match funding), from the Big Plan Projects budget to increase the likelihood of a successful outcome to the application to Sport England for grant funding.
