Armed robbery in Leighton

A bookmaker’s shop in Leighton Buzzard was targeted by an armed robber who demanded money and threatened a member of staff before fleeing the scene.

The incident happened on Saturday at around 6.50pm when the offender entered Betfred in Wing Road. The raider, who was armed with what appeared to be a handgun, threatened a member of staff demanded money, which was handed over, before fleeing the store towards New Road.

The offender is described as being a white male, between 5ft 10ins and 6ft tall, and was wearing a light coloured hooded top and had tights covering his face.

Two people have been arrested in relation to the raid and released on police bail pending further inquiries.

Beds Police are now appealing for witnesses to come forward if they have any information relating to the raid.

Det Con Rachel Foy, who is investigating the offence, is keen to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the raid or seen the offender leaving the shop after the raid. Det Con Foy said: “This was an extremely frightening attack and it is important that we catch this offender as soon as possible.

“The offender fled towards New Road but we believe that he may have made his way to Mentmore Park.

“We would like to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time of the robbery or anyone else who may have information – however small or insignificant they think it is – that could help us.”
