Buzzards’ promotion hopes suffered a slight setback on Saturday through no fault of their own as their game away to Bugbrooke was postponed.
Buzzards were looking for a fifth straight Midlands 2 East (South) league win over one of their promotion rivals, but the pitch in Northamptonshire was frozen and the game had to be called off.
With leaders Huntingdon & District not playing, victory for Buzzards would have seen them climb from second place to the top of the table for the first time this season.
However, the balance of power remains with the men from Wrights Meadow who travel to Wellingborough on Saturday.
One game that was played on Saturday saw Buzzards’ 2nds suffered a 21-10 defeat to their Kettering counterparts.
Buzzards had expected to take on Kettering’s 3rds, but instead played the 2nds and gave them a good run for their money, despite losing.
Unfazed by the prospect of taking on the 2nds, a young Buzzards side performed well, but fell behind during a fairly evenly contested first half as Kettering took the lead with a converted try through a silly Buzzards error.
The second half brought a better performance from the Buzzards, with a well worked move sending James Gurney over close to the posts, and a short while later a move from the half way line sent Arran Perry through to score.
Buzzards maintained the pressure during the second half, but somewhat against the run of play Kettering were able to score two converted tries to take the lead.
Nevertheless it was still an excellent performance from the young Buzzards featuring many U18 players up against a well drilled Kettering side.
Will Peck was playing out of position, but didn’t take a backward step all day with some strong running lines, while Tyler Green, Billy Mead, Matt Harvey and Dan Latimer also stepped up for their first proper experience of senior rugby and played very well, which should see them keep their place in the team.
