Buzzards climbed back up to second place in the Midlands 2 East (South) table thanks to a commanding 31-8 win over Lutterworth on Saturday.
With Dunstablians losing to Bugbrooke, Buzzards’ bonus point victory moves them back to the position that they have occupied for much of the last few weeks as their superb start to the year continued.
With leaders Huntingdon & District failing to secure a bonus point in their win at Wellingborough, the balance of power is now with Buzzards who are just four points from the summit, with a game still in hand.
On what was a bitterly cold afternoon at Wrights Meadow, Buzzards were able to secure revenge for a surprise defeat to Lutterworth earlier in the season, setting them up nicely for another home game, this time with Northampton BBOB on Saturday.
The home side were out of the blocks fast, but it was the away team who opened the scoring with an early penalty.
Buzzards then settled into their game and took control of proceedings, although they found scoring opportunities quite hard to come by in the difficult conditions.
However, they were soon off the mark with a couple of routine penalties courtesy of Dan David to put them ahead, and they never looked back.
Their first try arrived just before half time when Ollie Taylor produced a good break before passing to Graham McGill who committed the last man before giving Taylor the ball back to score in the corner. David’s conversion attempt missed, but the hosts made an 11-3 lead at the break.
He added another penalty early in the second half before Jack Micans scored their next try and David coolly converted for 21-3.
Micans was at it again just moments later, followed by a score for Bert Yirrell.
The visitors scored a try in the closing stages as Buzzards took their foot off the gas, but it was too little too late as the home side secured their win.
