TWO golfing pals dubbed the ‘Duracell Duo’ because they are ever-ready to play have been named as Clubmen of the Year by outgoing Leighton Buzzard Golf Club captain John Preston.

Electrical engineer Steve Leng, 53, and Adrian Stephenson, 48, the boss of an oil recycling company, have been sporting buddies since first meeting as teenagers.

They played cricket for Leighton Foresters (now called the Eggington Foresters) and were also regulars in the pack for the Leighton rugby team for a decade before taking up golf.

Since joining Leighton’s Plantation Road club, Steve and Adrian have been regular partners in trophy and medal competitions, including the inter-club matches clubs where they have both often been drafted in as last minute replacements.

Says ex-skipper Preston: “These are two great guys who are ever-ready to help out; you know you can always rely on their support. They fully deserve being named as Clubmen of the Year.”

Steve and Adrian also run the Olde Foresters Golf Society which organise golfing competitions to raise money for worthy causes.

A charity day at Leighton last October raised over £2,100 donated to the British Heart Foundation, plus the Devon Air Ambulance Service who flew to the aid of Leighton member Brian Slater when he collapsed on a course in the area last May.

In the eight years since they started fund-raising, the Olde Foresters have raised around £15,000 for very worthy causes.

>> Vandyke Upper School student Richard Hill is the new junior captain of the Leighton club. The 16-year old took up the sport around a decade ago and now plays off a handicap of six.

Richard, like elder brother Matthew who was the junior captain three years ago, has won golfing honours playing for Bedfordshire.

He succeeds fellow Vandyke pupil Elena Tizzard – both of whom were members of the Leighton team that retained the coveted Tavistock Trophy last year by an impressive 13 shots.
