Although the Hatters are interested in young centre-half Connor Essam, signing him would not end their search for a new ‘commanding’ defender, writes Mark Wood.
On whether Town had made a move for 20-year-old Essam, who was on loan at Luton earlier in the season and has been told he can leave Gillingham on a free, managing director Gary Sweet said: “No we haven’t at present. I’ll be honest, we’re probably looking for somebody with a little bit more experience than Connor as a priority.
“That’s not to say we might not be interested in Connor Essam at some point anyway, but I don’t think our search for a centre-half ends with Connor Essam.
“We’ve always had specific targets in mind and those targets pretty much remain the same.”
