The weather front that was nicknamed the ‘Beast from the East’ reared its ugly head yesterday, as schools in Leighton-Linslade sent students home early causing outrage among parents - but it’s back to normal this morning.

The recent onset of snow across Bedfordshire forced Cedars Upper School of Mentmore Road and Oak Bank School of Sandy Lane, to close half way through the day.

And they weren’t the only ones as Gilbert Inglefield Middle School of Vandyke Road, The Mary Bassett Lower School of Bassett Road and Brooklands Middle School of Brooklands all let children leave early.

Reactions to the early closures were soon seen on Twitter as parents vented their frustrations at the disruption.

Jamie Farmer said: “Any excuse for the teachers to finish early!!”

Jenni replied to say: “Exactly absolute joke closing due to a bit of snow-wont bother going to work then #nochance.”

Karen Walker said: “Ridiculous...a little snow, any excuse to get shot of the kids!! Southcott Lower NEVER closes due to bad weather!!”

Ruth Walker said: “Mary Bassett are letting children go early if your worried about travelling.”

Emily Richmond said: “Southcott lower never closes. Can understand if heating breaks down, but shouldn’t close for any other reason really!”

Julie Hutchins said: “Schools closing is silly. If Greenleas can stay open why not middle/upper ones too? We can’t all leave work early.”

Lara Bradford said: “Maybe Cedars concerned about kids who travel from Woburn Sands etc? Most lower school pupils live more locally.”

Samuel Cain said: “Cedars does have many students on roll from quite a distance away. The fear was that the weather was going to become inclement.”

Neil Wadsworth said: “Brooklands closed at 2.30 but kept kids till normal time if you couldn’t get them or ok them leaving early.”

Allan O’Leary tweeted @LBOamanda today after seeing that all schools across Central Bedfordshire are open again today.

He said: “So a sprinkle of snow closes schools but sheet ice on the ground and they are open? Makes no sense.”

> What do you think? Should schools send home early as soon as it starts snowing or does this cause too much disruption for working parents? Email news@lbobserver.co.uk or tweet @LBOnews
