Getting on the employment ladder can be tricky, whether it is straight after school or later in life, and taking on further training can be daunting in times where money can be tight.

So Central Bedfordshire Council’s Library service is bringing together organisations in one place for a free careers event to help with those decisions.

Set to run at Houghton Regis Library on Wednesday, 9 January, the aim of the event is to give local residents as much career, training, further education, volunteering and apprenticeship information as possible in one place.

The careers event will run from 4pm – 7pm on 9 January and visitors will be able to speak to representatives from a number of local organisations. These include: Oaklands College, Central Bedfordshire College, Bedford and Shuttleworth Colleges, the University of Bedfordshire, The National Careers Service, The University Technical College Central Bedfordshire and the Central Bedfordshire Children’s Workforce.

Councillor Brian Spurr, spokesman for sustainable communities services said: “We already know how important our libraries are to the community, so this vital hub in Houghton Regis is the ideal place to hold this careers event.

“Bringing organisations together in one place will help people to find out more about the opportunities available in the area.

“While looking to break into the jobs market or committing to further education may be a daunting prospect at this current time, we don’t want our residents to feel alone.

“This event is about providing the community with the information they need to empower them to take a new step, or seize another opportunity. We really would love to see you there.”

The council also runs a series of work clubs across the area to help with CV writing, job applications and interview techniques and offers one-to-one coaching and support, skills workshops and IT training.

These run at Leighton Buzzard Library, the Kingsland Skills and Enterprise Centre in Houghton Regis, Flitwick Library and the Adult Learning Centre at Stratton Upper School. For more information, visit www.myfuturetoday.org.uk or call 08081003140
