More than 40 people were evacuated from homes in Stanbridge Road, Leighton, on Saturday morning after emergency services were called to a report of fire to a low pressure gas main.
At 7.21am Beds Fire and Rescue Service was called to a report of fire. Workmen who had been working on low voltage electricity power cables in the road had reported that the low pressure gas main was leaking and that there was arcing from the electricity cables, which had set light to the main.
Two fire crews from Leighton Buzzard and a specialist rescue unit from Stopsley were sent to the scene.
The police were called to close the road.
As a precaution, 24 homes near the scene were evacuated and police and ambulance crews assisted with the evacuation of up to 40 people.
The electricity and gas supplies were isolated and fire crews extinguished the fire using dry powder extinguishers.
The incident was declared under control by 9.39 a.m.
Stanbridge Road remains closed and local homes will be temporarily without gas and electricity whilst workers replace electricity cables and the gas main.
