Football: It never rains, but it pours

LEIGHTON Town’s search for a first league win in nine matches has had to wait after two games were called off in the space of a week.

Town had been due to visit Evo-Stik League Division One Central whipping boys Woodford United last Tuesday night, but that fixture was postponed, and Saturday’s trip to Beaconsfield SYCOB suffered the same fate as torrential rain played havoc with football fixtures up and down the country.

However, weather permitting, Craig Wells’ men will return to action at Bell Close on Tuesday night when they take on Bedford Town in the Beds Senior Cup.

Their bid to return to winning ways in the league will continue on Saturday when Rugby Town visit.

Rugby were one of the few sides to get a league game in on Saturday as they saw off Fleet Town 2-0 to maintain their spot in the play-off places.

Leighton’s last outing was a 0-0 draw against Fleet on November 17 – stretching their poor run of form to one win in 18 matches in all competitions.

That means they will go into Saturday’s clash with Rugby sat 18th in the table. However, Wells maintains that a return to better form is on the cards – but to do that they will need to get games played.

If the Bell Close pitch holds up, three of Town’s next four league games come at home, giving the team the perfect chance to pick up some much needed points.
