At Sunday’s Royal & Derngate’s co-production of The Go-Between won the award for Best Musical Production in the Theatre Awards UK ceremony at London’s Guildhall this week.

The new musical adaptation by Richard Taylor and David Wood of LP Hartley’s classic novel was staged in Northampton in 2011, in a co-production with West Yorkshire Playhouse and Derby Live, and was developed in association with Perfect Pitch. The Go-Between beat stiff competition in this awards category, winning out over Chichester Festival Theatre’s production of Sweeney Todd (starring Michael Ball and Imelda Staunton) and Sheffield Theatres’ production of Company.

Royal & Derngate’s chief executive Martin Sutherland said: “It was great to see this new musical, which was developed here over a number of years, being recognised in this way. We’re really proud to have been part of this co-production, and pleased that we can bring such high quality new shows to audiences in Northampton.”

The annual Theatre Awards UK are given to honour creative excellence and the outstanding work seen on stages throughout England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
