Friends of the Earth are pushing for more house building in south Leighton in a bid to get vital funding for improved transport links.
The group, and residents living near Astral Park, are furious that a new sports hub for the south end of town is likely to cause traffic congestion as the site is inadequately served by access roads and parking provision.
Developers, councillors, FoE and home-owners met to thrash out how to resolve the dilemma. After their round-table meeting FoE spokesperson Victoria Harvey said: “South Bedfordshire Friends of the Earth has campaigned for two decades to improve public transport, clear rubbish from the river, plant native hedges, trees and wildflowers, raise money for recycling bins in the town centre, and to support the town centre, and the market.
“We believe, after much thought and involvement in the issue, that the continuing argument over Astral Park will continue to drain the town of much-needed funding for all these other areas.”
